# Google Ads for SaaS: capture demand you already earned

Meta and TikTok interrupt people who were not looking. Google Search captures people who typed the problem into a box and hit enter. That difference makes it the highest-intent traffic you can buy, and also the least forgiving: you pay per click whether or not your funnel deserves the visitor. This chapter is the setup that survives contact with a real budget, taken from running it, not from reading about it.

0/9 moves

01

## Do the CAC math before you touch the account

Search ads are a spreadsheet before they are a channel. Work out your LTV, set a blended CAC ceiling at roughly half of it, and pick a hard kill line just above the ceiling. Every operating decision later (scale, hold, cut) is made against those two numbers, never against how a campaign feels.

- LTV around 2x your CAC ceiling is the minimum for the channel to be workable; below that, close this chapter and go compound the free channels
- Judge CAC from your OWN database (signups and subscriptions carrying ad attribution), not from the Ads dashboard, which undercounts and lags
- Budget small at the start: enough for a few hundred clicks a month is enough to learn

The channel verdict for most early SaaS is workable but tight: roughly break-even cash over the first months against expected LTV. You run it for the compounding keyword and copy knowledge, then scale the parts that beat the ceiling.

02

## Two Search campaigns, nothing else

Start with exactly two Search-only campaigns and give the higher-intent one its own budget so the other cannot starve it:

1. 1Competitor and alternative terms: people typing a rival's name or \[rival\] alternative are already shopping for your category. Highest intent, cheapest entry bids, usually the workhorse.
2. 2Category generics: what your buyer types when they do not know any brand yet. Bigger volume, colder intent, so cap its bids lower.
3. 3No brand campaign while organic already owns your name, no Display, no Performance Max, search partners OFF. Every one of those spends your learning budget on lower-intent inventory.

Send clicks to public pages that already convert organically, never to a login-walled app screen. The signup flow is the conversion path, not the landing page.

03

## Keywords: exact and phrase match, negatives from day one

Broad match hands your budget to Google's guesses. Use exact \[brackets\] and phrase quotes only, and attach a shared negative list before the first impression:

- Negatives that pay for themselves immediately: free, crack, apk, tutorial, how to, jobs, salary, course, and the names of adjacent tools you do not compete with
- Never add a negative that blocks your own use case; check each one against every ad group before saving
- Scrub the search-terms report in week one: close variants will surface queries you never bid on, and some of them are gold worth promoting to exact keywords
- Low keyword volume leaving budget unspent is fine. Loosening match types to spend the budget is how the channel dies

04

## Ads that pass policy and still sell

Responsive search ads want up to 15 headlines; fill them with the reasons buyers actually choose you (what it does, the price, the objection killers), not adjectives. Two rules save you from expensive lessons:

- Competitor names are legal as KEYWORDS and forbidden in AD COPY. Write switching-framed copy that never names the rival
- Ad strength is a composition heuristic, not a rank factor. Competitor ad groups grade Poor forever because the grader wants the trademark in the copy and policy forbids it; accept the grade
- Put your price in a headline. It costs you clicks from people who would never pay, which is the point
- Add sitelinks to pricing, examples and your strongest use-case page; they are free real estate on every impression

05

## Conversion tracking IS the campaign

Google optimizes toward whatever you report, so a broken conversion event does not just miscount, it steers the money wrong. The classic failure: the purchase event lives on a checkout success page, but your real buyers convert through an in-app paywall that never visits that page. Zero conversions reported, four real customers, and the account learning from silence.

1. 1Map every path a buyer can take to a paid subscription, and fire the purchase event on all of them, deduped by transaction id
2. 2Report the cash collected today as the conversion value (an annual plan reports the annual charge), so bidding optimizes toward money, not signups
3. 3Add signup as a secondary observation-only conversion; never let the account bid on it
4. 4Keep auto-tagging on and store the click id and UTMs on the user record at signup; that is what lets you compute true CAC from your own database
5. 5Missed conversions are recoverable: export the click ids from your database and use offline conversion import

Verify with ground truth, not the pixel: query your own database for ad-attributed signups and customers in the first 48 hours. If the Ads UI and your database disagree, your database is right and the tracking needs fixing.

06

## The operating cadence

The account is a weekly habit, not a daily hobby. The cadence that keeps it honest:

1. 1Days 2 to 3: confirm the conversion status left Inactive, and do the first search-terms scrub
2. 2Weekly: scrub search terms, and pause any keyword that has spent meaningfully past your CAC target with zero conversions
3. 3Day 14: kill ad groups with low CTR and zero conversions; shift budget toward the campaign beating your CAC ceiling
4. 4At roughly 30 recorded purchases: switch to target-CPA bidding at your CAC target. Before that, smart bidding has nothing to learn from and burns money guessing
5. 5Scale in steps of 30% or less, only while CAC stays under your ceiling. Over the kill line: cut the worst half of keywords instead of raising budget

- Expert mode on, every auto-apply recommendation OFF; Google's suggestions optimize Google's revenue
- Geo targeting set to presence only, never presence or interest
- Account-level URL suffix carrying UTMs, so your analytics and the Ads account tell one story

## Key moves

0/9

Reading is warm-up. Check these off as you actually ship them; progress saves in your browser.

- Compute LTV, a CAC ceiling near half of it, and a hard kill line
- Build two Search-only campaigns: competitor terms and category generics
- Attach a shared negative list before the first impression
- Keep exact and phrase match only; never broad
- Fire the purchase conversion on EVERY real payment path, with cash-today values
- Store click ids and UTMs on the user record at signup
- Scrub search terms weekly and pause spenders with zero conversions
- Switch to target-CPA only after ~30 recorded purchases
- Scale in steps of 30% or less while CAC holds under the ceiling

Search captures demand. Content creates it.

Google Ads only harvests people already searching for your category. Viraloop's daily short-form engine is what puts your product in front of the people who were not, so next month's search volume includes you.
