Chapter 13Distribution 7 min read

# Build an audience on X

X rewards volume and personality more than any other channel, and it is the one place where founders reach other founders, investors and press in the same feed. The account compounds: every post is seen by the followers the last one earned, so the cost of the first hundred posts buys the reach of the next thousand.

0/8 moves

01

## Volume is the strategy

One post a day is a hobby. The accounts that grow post three to five times daily, because reach on X is a lottery with a ticket per post and the algorithm shows a fraction of your followers each time. Nothing here needs production: a post is a sentence.

- 2 to 3 standalone posts a day: an observation, a number, a lesson from this week's build
- 1 thread a week, on the thing you know better than your reader
- 10 to 20 replies a day on other people's posts, which is where new followers actually come from
- Repost your own best post after a month; the overlap in who saw it is tiny

Write in one sitting and schedule the week. Trying to be witty on demand at 9am every day is what kills the cadence by week three.

02

## The formats that travel

Short viral content on X spreads through memes, hot takes and stat-driven threads. Lead with the meme or the hot take, pack the thread with surprising data, and end with "That's why I built \_\_\_. Try it here." Formats worth rotating:

- Build in public: a real number, a screenshot, and what you changed to move it (the Authority chapter covers what makes these land)
- Data thread: "Here's how \[X\] affects your brain / body / money", with sources
- The teardown: someone's landing page or funnel, what works, what you would change
- Contrarian take you can actually defend, never one you picked for the engagement
- The list post: the tools, the mistakes, the lessons, one line each

03

## Use Articles for the things a thread cannot hold

X Articles are long-form posts that live on X itself, so a reader never leaves the app and the post never eats the reach penalty that an outbound link does. They suit the pieces a thread flattens: the teardown with ten screenshots, the launch story, the definitive guide to your one claim.

- Repurpose something you already wrote, rather than writing twice for two audiences
- Keep the announcing post free of links, and point at the Article, which is native
- Use the images inline; an Article with no visuals reads worse than the thread would have
- Link out from inside the Article body, where it costs you nothing

Articles need a paid X subscription, and they are not yours: no SEO value, no export, and reach depends on one company's roadmap. Publish the canonical version on your own site and treat the Article as the distribution copy, never the other way round.

04

## Write the first line like a hook

The timeline shows roughly two lines before the fold, so the first line is the whole pitch. Cut the throat-clearing ("I've been thinking about..."), put the number or the claim first, and never open a post with a link: X suppresses reach on posts that send people away, so links go in the reply.

05

## Replies are the growth engine

A new account has no reach of its own, so borrow it. Pick 20 to 30 accounts your buyer already follows, turn on notifications, and reply early with something that stands alone as a thought. Being first matters less than being worth reading; the goal is the profile click, not the like.

- Add information the post left out, or a counter-example. Never "great post!"
- Reply inside the first 20 minutes, while the post is still being distributed
- One reply per account per day; five in a row under the same person reads as stalking
- Follow up in DMs only after a real exchange, and never with a pitch as the first message

Replies are also the cheapest audience research you will ever do: the questions people ask under a big account are the posts, and the pages, you should be writing next.

06

## Set the profile up to convert

Every reply sends people to the profile, so it does the selling. The bio names what you build and who it is for, the pinned post is your best proof (a result, a demo, a thread), and the link goes to one page, not a link tree. Same rule as the short-form chapter: a stranger should know what they would get and where to go, in five seconds.

07

## Turn the timeline into signups

Followers are not the goal. The two mechanisms that convert are the same ones the short-form chapter uses: a lead magnet keyed to a reply word, and a soft product mention at the end of posts that earned the right to it. Roughly one in five posts should mention the product at all.

The X account that sells is the one where the product is the obvious conclusion of what you have been posting about all month, not the one that posts ads between the good stuff.

## Key moves

0/8

Reading is warm-up. Check these off as you actually ship them; progress saves in your browser.

- Write and schedule a week of posts in one sitting
- Post 2 to 3 times a day, one thread a week
- Build a list of 25 accounts your buyer already follows
- Reply 10 times a day, early, with something that stands alone
- Rewrite the bio and pin your best proof
- Repurpose one long piece as an X Article, canonical version on your site
- Move links out of posts and into the first reply
- Mention the product in no more than 1 post in 5

The posts are the hard part. Not the shipping.

Viraloop turns your website into a week of on-brand content and posts it for you, so the cadence survives the weeks you are heads-down building.
